Nick Bolton Passes Derrick Johnson for the Most 10-Tackle Games in Franchise History
Nick Bolton knew Sunday's 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers had been a big night for the defense. The linebacker had made 11 tackles — more than anyone on either roster — and only later did the milestone land: that performance was his 26th career game with double-digit tackles, moving him past franchise legend Derrick Johnson and into sole possession of the most in team history.
Johnson, a four-time Pro Bowler and the longtime heart of the Kansas City defense from 2005 through 2017, set the standard at 25 such games across 13 seasons. Bolton needed just six. The former Missouri Tiger and 2021 second-round pick now stands atop a leaderboard that spans generations of linebackers.
Bolton's reaction said as much about the man as the milestone did about the player. Speaking with reporters afterward, he admitted he had been aware of the chase since the loss to the Colts a few weeks earlier — a game he felt he had not earned it in.
"I knew going into the Colts game. I missed a couple of tackles and didn't deserve it then," Bolton said. "But it's pretty cool being in the echelon with those guys. A lot of linebackers came before me who laid the groundwork, and being part of history with them is a special moment for me."
A leader in the middle of a 5-0 defense
Through six weeks he has 48 total tackles with 23 solos and 4.5 stuffs, and for his career he now stands at 660 tackles across 79 games — along with six sacks, three forced fumbles and five interceptions. Against the Chargers, his 11 tackles led both teams on a night the defense held Los Angeles to two field goals. He is the communicator in the huddle, the guy who lines everyone up before the snap and the first man to the ball carrier after it.
What it means — and what's next
Records like this one matter because of the company they keep. Derrick Johnson's name carries real weight in Kansas City — a homegrown star, a leader through lean years, the kind of player whose number gets talked about for the ring of honor. For Bolton to pass him in fewer than half as many seasons puts the 26-year-old linebacker on a trajectory toward the same rarefied air, and he is doing it as the anchor of a defense that has given up just six points to a division rival.
The road does not get easier. Kansas City travels to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks next Sunday night, a primetime test against a physical offense in one of the league's loudest buildings. The defense will need its captain at his best — and based on everything Bolton has shown over the last six weeks, that is exactly what he plans to deliver.
This Sunday night, the defense sets the tone and the noise does the rest — shop the Loudest Fans collection at Kingdom Clothing.
